Richmond Edward McIntyre, Sr.

BURLINGTON- Mr. Richmond Edward McIntyre Sr., 90, died Friday, October 27, 2006, in Greensboro.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Burlington. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park, Greensboro.

Mr. McIntyre Sr. was a member of First Baptist Church, Apple Street, Burlington. He taught school in Ellerbe from 1936 to 1948, and in 1948, he accepted a teaching position in Burlington. In 1950, he became principal at J.F. Gunn Elementary. During the early years of integration, he was appointed principal of Sellars Gunn Junior High School from which he retired. Mr. McIntyre Sr. served in the North Carolina School System with 45 years of service.

He is the son of Mr. Richmond J. McIntyre and Mrs. Beatrice Pittman McIntyre, both deceased. He is also predeceased by his wife Mrs. Mary Lou Wallington McIntyre and son Darius McIntyre.

He is survived by one son Elder Richmond E. “Ricky” McIntyre Jr. (Jannetta) of Atlanta, Ga.; three daughters, Sonia M. Leath (Joel) of Raleigh, Valeria M. Hearn (Charles) of Centennial, Colo. and Sharonetta L. McIntyre of Greensboro; 11 grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Blackwell Funeral Home, Burlington and at other times the family will receive visitors at the home. The body may be viewed Monday from 1 to 9 p.m.
